Insanity. This is what my schedule would look like too.
I ignore any non-celebration facebook invites, so when I read Scollin’s post I was surprised that anyone could be offended to not get a response to their show plug. So, just to see what it would look like, I went and added every invitation currently in my facebook inbox to my calendar in red. My personal, non-show calendar of actual real-life things I want to do is in blue, and my show (which I don’t use facebook to promote) is in green. This is just for today at 5pm through next Monday. It doesn’t even include the UCB calendar, but it does feature more than one weeks-long “invitation” to vote for web videos from people who aren’t even my friends on facebook.
I’m not saying don’t send invitations. I completely understand the challenges of promoting your show, and facebook is an easy, central place to do that. But please, be thoughtful about who you’re inviting, and don’t get offended if someone doesn’t respond.
To be fair, the girl who said I was rude is not any type of performer so probably gets a fraction of the Event Invites I get (though probably got invited to more parties in high school). And just to reiterate, I do think Facebook Invites are great. From my last post:
“Just for clarity’s sake, the ability to make an Event page for your show is a great feature on Facebook. I definitely take advantage of it and I think you’re silly not to as it’s free publicity. So keep sending me Invites, people! I like to get them! Just understand that if I say I’m not coming it’s always* due to a scheduling conflict and not my feelings about you or your performance. The last thing I would want to do is hurt a friend’s feelings but for the sake of getting an accurate count (where an accurate count is often crucial to your peformance) I will click “Not Attending” if I know I’m not attending.”
